Eat, Drink, And Be Merry

This has nothing to do with nothing but I was just reading "This Day In Baseball" at Baseball Library. According to those boys, on October 6, 1845, "the first recorded baseball game using Cartwright's rules (was) played between members of the Knickerbocker Club. Only 14 players (participated) as Duncan Curry's team defeats Alex Cartwright's team 11-8 in a shortened game of only 3 innings."

I think this is the perfect excuse for a national holiday. Everybody gets the day off work and MLB makes sure we have a playoff triple header scheduled. The weather's still good enough to barbecue so we can get fat on pork steaks, brats, and baby back ribs while drinking the cold, frosty, hops flavored beverage of our choice (I'm partial to Bass Ale) and listening to the games on the radio (or on the tv, if you have to be like that).

We can call it "National Anything To Get Out Of Work And Watch Baseball Day". And while we're at it, Opening Day should be a national holiday too. Somebody needs to write a congressman or Jim Bunning or W and get the ball rolling on this.
