Joe Sullivan

Joseph D. Sullivan, base ball player, died at his home in Charlestown late last night. He first came into prominence in 1891 in the Brotherhood League. The following year he was with the Rochester Club of the Eastern League. Washington then secured him and he played with that club up to the middle of 1894, when Philadelphia signed him. While playing with Philadelphia his health gave way. Later Sullivan went to St. Louis. He was twenty-seven years old.

Joe Sullivan played in fifty-one games with the Browns in 1896 and his cause of death is listed at The Deadball Era as consumption. In what was a rather poor trade for the Browns, on June 28, 1896 they shipped Duff Cooley to Philadelphia for Sullivan, Tuck Turner, and cash. Let's hope it was a lot of cash.
